Big news regarding Aadhaar card, rules changed from registration to update

Aadhaar card : Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has announced that rules for Aadhaar card registration and updating > has been done. The 12-digit unique Aadhaar number can now be updated online and offline, according to its January 16 notification. The amendments are known as the Aadhaar (Enrolment and Update) Amendment Regulations, 2024. 

Online and offline update options

Under the new rules, Aadhaar cardholders now have the facility to update information online or offline. The Central Identity Data Repository (CIDR) can be updated by visiting the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra, using a mobile application or accessing the UIDAI website. Unlike the earlier 2016 rules, which primarily allowed online address updates, the revised guidelines have removed such restrictions, potentially enabling online updates for various details, including mobile numbers.


  • Ration card, voter identity card, government issued identity card/address bearing certificate and Indian passport serve as proof of both identity and address.
  • PAN Card, Driving License, Secondary or Senior School Marksheet/ School Leaving Certificate with photograph, Government issued Identity Card/ Certificate – serves as the only proof of identity.
  • Electricity/Water/Gas Bill (Last 3 Months), Bank/Post Office Passbook, Rent/Lease/ Leave & The license agreement serves as proof of address only.

Revised Forms: 

UIDAI has revised the old form to make it more user-friendly. Let’s explore forms and their purposes. 

Form 1 is for Enrollment and Update of Aadhaar. Any person aged 18 years and above, resident or Non-Resident Indian (NRI), having proof of Indian address) can use this form to apply for an Aadhaar number. The same form can also be used to update details in Aadhaar. 

Form 2 is for NRIs, who have proof of their address outside India. They will need it for registration and updating. 

Form 3 to 6 is for children.  

The old form was replaced by the new form 

The existing forms for enrollment for Aadhaar and updating Aadhaar details have been replaced with new forms. The new Form 1 will be used for Aadhaar registration for resident persons and non-resident persons aged 18 years and above. People of the same category will use the same form to update the information. 

Aadhaar Card Update

  1. The new UIDAI rules state that Aadhaar card holders will now be able to easily update information through online or offline mode.
  2. To update information in the Central Identity Data Repository (CIDR), you can visit the nearest Aadhaar Seva Kendra or use the mobile app and the UIDAI website.
  3. In the old rules, there was an option to upgrade the address only in online mode. You have to go to Aadhaar Center to upgrade other details. That means now you can update both mobile number and address online.

Separate form for NRIs 

Use of Form 2 has been made mandatory for NRIs. Those whose address is outside India can update Aadhaar using Form 2. While NRIs whose addresses are Indian can make necessary changes using Form 3. Form 4 can be used by children of NRIs whose addresses are abroad. Similarly, Form 5 to Form 9 have been issued for various categories.

Enrollment for Aadhaar and updating of Aadhaar details can be done either on the basis of document verification or on the basis of confirmation by the Head of Family (HoF). If the latter method is used, the HoF has to provide his/her supporting details and sign Form 1. NRI must provide email id in Aadhaar. If an NRI provides a non-Indian mobile number, no SMS/text message will be sent to it, as per Form 1 guidelines. For NRIs, only valid Indian passports are acceptable as Proof of Identity (POI).

Important points while updating Aadhaar card

  • If a person’s age is declared without documentary evidence, only the declared or estimated year of birth will be printed on the Aadhaar card.
  • Documentary evidence is required to complete date of birth on Aadhaar card.
  • Aadhaar registration or updates may be based on document verification or confirmation by the Head of Family (HoF), where the HoF should provide Aadhaar details and sign Form 1.
  • For NRIs providing non-Indian mobile number, as per Form 1 guidelines, no SMS/text message will be sent.
  • A valid Indian passport is the only acceptable Proof of Identity (POI) for NRIs.
